Datacenter shares the core licensing model with Standard but permits unlimited operating system environments on the licensed host, which is what makes it the right edition for a consolidated virtualisation platform. It also adds Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica without limits and Software Defined Networking.

The break-even against Standard sits at around four to six virtual machines per host. Below that Standard is cheaper; above it Datacenter is, and the gap widens quickly with density.
